The Altona Noise Barrier Tunnel is part of the A7 highway expansion project in Hamburg and is designed to reduce traffic noise for the adjacent residential areas. With a length of approximately 2.23 km, it is one of the largest noise barrier projects in Germany.
The project
The Altona Noise Barrier Tunnel was constructed as part of the eight-lane expansion of the A7 north of the Hamburg Elbe Tunnel.
The structure, approximately 2.23 km long, improves noise protection for the Othmarschen and Bahrenfeld neighborhoods and reconnects previously separated areas. Green spaces, parks, and community gardens are being created above the tunnel, enhancing the quality of life in the surrounding area.
The project is part of the so-called “Hamburger Deckel” initiative and is one of the most significant infrastructure and urban development projects in Hamburg.
